2008 Rules and RegulationsGeneral rulesThe basic rules of our event are those used by the American Endurance Ride Conference, AERC, (Click here to download the rules from www.aerc.org). Rules in addition to the above are as follows:1. RULING FOR METABOLIC PULLS DUE TO OVER-RIDING 1A. A rider who rides their horse at a pace fast enough to cause the horse to develop metabolic problems produced as a result of over-riding the horse, as determined by two veterinarians, shall be disqualified from starting a horse in the next race day ride. 1B. A rider who during the total course of the Great Santa Fe Trail Endurance Ride over-rides two horses to the point that they develop metabolic problems as a result of over-riding, shall be disqualified from the remainder of the ride. 2. To enter this event, a rider must have completed a 50 mile ride conducted by sanctioning body, and must be verified. 3. A rider must be able to bring his/her horse under control and stop within 100 yards of the finish line or the rider will be disqualified for the day. A lane of 100 yards will be clearly marked at the end of each ride. 4. All horses and riders must be present and accounted for at the vet-in prior to the first day's ride. Entries for all rides close at the start of the first day's ride, or other date as determined by management. 5. Horses must travel with the ride for the duration of the entire ride and must be present in the race village at the end of every day. The exception is when there is an option to travel to the next village in the evening or the next day. Riders do not need to be present for the entire time. 6. All horses must be presented at the vet-in preceding the first ride and will be paint branded (semi permanent) with the team number and a letter, as well as photographed. All alternate horses not competing with the designated team, will be marked with the team number and an X or Z. 7. Horses within a team can be ridden by any team member in any order, BUT, it is all of the rider's responsibilities to drop the identification card with the horse name and number and rider's name, for the next day, in the registration box by 10 PM the night before the ride. That card will be compared to the rider and horse at check in before the start of the day's ride. 8. Any team member or combination of members may ride any day, but must ride the same horse for the duration of the day's ride. 9. If a rider is pulled for any reason, except over riding, that rider is given a time of 24 hours in calculating the team score only. If the rider is pulled and the reason is over riding, that rider's time does not count in the score. 10. The team with the lowest combined time is considered the winner. Team awards are not given on daily basis only an award for the entire event. 11. Every rider is considered an individual rider, plus a team rider if it applies. TeamsThe only team competition for the 2008 Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race Endurance Ride will be the four rider teams. All other riders will ride as individuals. The teams must have the same riders for the entire ten days of riding. (No rider substitution.) The top three times will be combined for the team score. Example, assume the times for the four riders on Day 1 are: Sam: 5hrs 26 min Jim's time would be knocked out and the team time for the day would be 19 hours and 22 minutes. Jim would still get credit for finishing and riding the 50 miles. But assume the times for Day 2 were: Sam: 5hrs 45min The time for Day 2 would be 38 hours. Riders pulled would receive a time of 24 hours. Pulled riders would receive no other credit. A team must start at least three riders each day. If all three riders were pulled, the team's time would be 72 hours. Riders pulled for over-riding their horse or not having control of their horse at the finish line, will receive a 'No time'. No team member substitution after August 31, 2008. No horse substitution after August 31, 2008. Each team may have up to eight horses. All eight horses must be checked in at the beginning of the ride, and must remain with the team for the duration of the ride. If a horse leaves the ride, it cannot be used again during the ride. Individual Riders:An individual rider may have up to three horses. All horses must be checked in at the beginning of the ride. There is no substitution of rider or horses after the ride begins. (Exception: An individual rider may buy, borrow, or lease another horse from an individual, providing the horse has been checked in at the beginning of the ride.)
