2008 SFT Horse Race Volunteers

During the 2007 Ride, we had over 10 volunteers who traveled the entire distance of the event. These people played a very important part in allowing this historic event to happen.

Listed below are the positions that were filled by the volunteers and a brief description of the job:

In-Timer: Record the time of the rider coming into the vet check.

Out-Timer: Record the time of the rider leaving the vet check.

Vet Check Host: Greet all the riders coming into the vet check, help the riders by holding their horse, bring water for the riders, essentially a helping hand.

Pulse and Respiration (P&R): Take the pulse and respiration of each horse as they come into the vet check.

Vet Scribe: Write down the information onto the rider's vet card as told by the vets.

Follow up/Drag Driver: This person follows the last riders, pick up trail markers, and water tanks. The driver drove a Treker, the Official Utility Vehicle of The Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race Endurance Ride.

Water Distribution Person: This person assisted in setting out water tanks, and then would check them to insure that the tanks always had water. In some cases, this person provided drinking water to the riders on the trail.

Traffic Control: This entails assisting riders across intersections, directing crews to staging areas, and helping put out traffic barriers.

Data Entry: This is entering information to The Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race Endurance Ride web site on a real-time basis. This will be entered via satellite communication.

Race Village Organization: This includes helping lay out the Race Villages, directing teams, volunteers, and others to their respective camp sites in the Race Village.

All volunteers must take care of their own sleeping arrangements, i.e. camper, tent, local motel, etc. Volunteers with RV's, etc. are in the Race Village with the riders and their teams.
